Winemaking Notes

Giesen Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2024 is crafted to emphasise the vineyards and amplify varietally expressive fruit. As soon as the fruit arrives in the winery, it is de-stemmed and gently pressed. Following gentle extraction, carefully selected yeasts are added to the juice to start fermentation, chosen to build texture, weight and aromatics. Fermentation takes approximately three weeks at temperatures between 12–16°C. Parcels of fruit are batch-fermented and then blended to create a wine with wonderful fruit expression and great balance between subtle natural sweetness and classic Marlborough acidity. We select fruit from vineyards throughout the Wairau Valley and Awatere Valley, giving the ability to consistently blend to the Giesen style year in, year out. Technical details: Alc/Vol 13.0% · pH 3.2 · TA 7.0 g/l · Residual Sugar 3.3 g/l.

Vintage Conditions

The 2024 growing season saw a change to an El Niño-driven weather system, resulting in dryness to the east of New Zealand, with drought conditions declared in Marlborough on 14th March 2024. Fortunately, the winter of 2023 was very wet — the second wettest on record — which was ideal for replenishing the soil and aquifers ahead of the new growing season. However, intermittent frosts in late October during the crucial flowering period led to a lower crop size for 2024. The lower yield, combined with near-perfect autumn weather during harvest, produced fruit with exceptional concentration and purity. The Wairau Valley fruit adds brightness, tropical and citrus flavours and tighter acidity, whilst the cooler, drier and windier Awatere Valley contributes fullness, richness, grilled tropical notes and dry herbal character to the blend.
