Winemaking Notes

Elderton Estate Shiraz 2024 is a four-vineyard blend sourced from Nuriootpa, Greenock, Craneford and the newly introduced Mengler vineyard — each site contributing unique character owing to its different aspect, elevation and soil type. Greenock on the western end of the Barossa brings a vibrant bouquet and punchy tannin; Nuriootpa delivers depth of tannin and lovely sweet spiced fruit; Craneford, a more elevated site on leaner soils, adds a savoury note; and Mengler brings brightness and vitality from its high-altitude Eden Valley position. Post fermentation in open vats with both heading boards and pump over cap management, single batches were put to a combination of new and used French and American oak for malolactic fermentation and maturation for 24 months before final blending — a meticulous and considered approach delivering a true Barossa expression of Shiraz of outstanding structure, fruit and freshness. 14.8% alc.

Vintage Conditions

After a cool 2023 season, 2024 began to dry out with below-average winter rainfall, leading to an early and warm start to the season — leaving some vineyards vulnerable to frost damage, observed to a small extent in Nuriootpa. The ripening season was long and mild, allowing for both decent flavour and tannin development and an excellent balance across the four Elderton vineyard sites. The nett result is an Estate Shiraz of exceptional concentration, structure and freshness — vibrant dark purple in the glass, with spiced plum, lifted berry fruits and a full-bodied, classic and serious palate of outstanding Barossa Shiraz distinction and enduring Elderton benchmark character.
