As a tribute to this great moment in history, Domaine Laroche has dedicated its most emblematic wine to Saint Martin and celebrates it every year in November.
Saint Martin was born in present-day Hungary in 316. An officer in the Roman legion, he was touched by faith and converted to Christianity.
While in Gaul on a night watch, he met a needy man and gave him half of his cloak, cut in half with his sword. When he died in 397, his relics were kept in Tours where they were the object of ardent worship.
Nearly five centuries later, the abbots of the city, fearing the Norman invasions, hid the precious relics in one of their discreet properties: it was the Obédiencerie de Chablis. The niche that housed them can still be seen in the remains of a tower, in the middle of the wines being made.
The terroir of Chablis is characterised by excellent freshness and a finesse not devoid of energy. Chablis Saint Martin, thanks to its rigorous ageing on fine lees, also offers the minerality characteristic of the best terroirs of the appellation. Winery Notes
