Charles Melton Grains of Paradise Shiraz 2021 is a deeply coloured, richly expressive Barossa Valley Shiraz from Krondorf and Rowland Flat β€” a juicy sweet plum and red-fruited nose with an underlay of fragrant herbs, and a very expressive, generous, rich mouthfeel with a touch of roasted meat and that tongue-coating, plush width that carries through. The American oak casks provide a sweet and spicy secondary undercurrent that begs for proper cellaring of 25 years or more. One of the great Barossa Shiraz wines, from one of the great Barossa winemakers.

Appearance

Deeply coloured β€” more so than the Voices of Barossa, with the rich, dense hue of a Krondorf and Rowland Flat Shiraz of genuine concentration and the depth that 2021 Barossa fruit and American oak maturation deliver.

Aroma

Juicy sweet plum and red fruit on the nose with an underlay of fragrant herbs β€” expressive, generous, and immediately captivating, with the complexity and depth that old vine Barossa Shiraz and American oak maturation build over time.

Palate

Very expressive and generous β€” rich mouthfeel with a touch of roasted meat and that tongue-coating, plush width that carries through to a long, structured finish. The American oak casks providing a sweet and spicy secondary undercurrent that rewards patience. Cellar for 25 years or more for the full expression of what this wine can become.

Pairs With

The main course companion par excellence β€” filet mignon, King Henry chops, or French lamb racks. A Barossa Shiraz of this richness, depth, and structure demands the finest cut at the table.

Producer History

Charles Melton Wines was established in 1984 and has since gained both national and international recognition for its fine red table wines from the Barossa Valley. Charlie Melton was one of the first winemakers to recognise the value and tradition of the Barossa’s old vineyard Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro β€” at a time when others were pulling out historic vineyards to plant more fashionable varieties, Charlie was convincing farmers to keep theirs. He was one of a small group of winemakers who helped retain the viticultural heritage of the Barossa, and the region owes him a debt that cannot be overstated.

The Charles Melton range moves from the light red Rose of Virginia through to Australia’s premier RhΓ΄ne-style red, Nine Popes. Charlie also makes small quantities of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sparkling Shiraz, and is the only Australian producer of a vin santo–styled dessert wine, Sotto di Ferro. Grains of Paradise is the fullest, richest expression of the Charles Melton Shiraz philosophy β€” deeply coloured, generously structured, and built for the long haul.
