The 2018 Genesis is a medium-bodied wine, boasting a complex and savoury flavour profile. Its expressive bouquet includes notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and star anise, as well as hints of cedary nuances that add depth and complexity. The wine is also very stylish, with a pleasant touch of charcuterie.

“For me Genesis is indisputably the finest Syrah in the country. An impeccably poised paradigm of eminent drinkability and exceptional taste. Biodynamic certification is one thing, but the detail infused by life’s experiences, far and wide, drinking the world’s great wines, is another. Refined by virtue of long-limbed tannins, dutiful freshness and archetypal cool climatic aromas of lilac, star anise, cardamon, bracken, smoked charcuterie, blueberry green olive and iodine, all impeccably strung across a skein of peppery freshness tailing long. Mercifully, without a skerrick of reduction, the bane of so much domestic gear. But things are becoming warmer, even on the granitic screes of sub-alpine Beechworth. Subsequently Castagna picked the 2018 across a number of passes through the vineyard, ensuring a sum of herbal lift, ripeness, and tension. The extraction, too, a little gentler. Forward and a littler plumper than most years, perhaps, yet I would never think this mid-weighted wine from a hot year unless I was told. Delicious already but will hold and develop nicely across the mid-term.” - Ned Goodwin MW

Winery & Vintage Info

The vineyard was planted in 1997 on what was previously grazing land. Five different clones of Syrah are grown, all of which are progeny of the original 1850s stock imported into Australia from the Rhone.

The land has been farmed biodynamic from the very beginning and it is this farming method that allows the minerality that is in this ancient granitic soil to show through in the wine.
