Winemaking Notes

Buttermans Track Sangiovese 2022 is crafted with minimal chemical and technological intervention, showcasing the philosophy that has guided the winery since 2008. The wine features complex nose of dark cherries, blood plums and liquorice with note of forest floor and dried herbs, demonstrating the premium quality winemaking approach. Buttermans Track Wines is owned and operated by Gary, Louise and Joel Trist, with the vineyard and winery located in the heart of St Andrews on the edge of the Yarra Valley. The 0.53 hectares of Sangiovese was planted in 2003 on grafted rootstock Richter 110, consisting of 50 percent MAT1 and 50 percent MAT2 clones. Richter 110 has high phylloxera tolerance, high to very high drought tolerance and imparts low vigour to the grafted vine. All vines are trained to the VSP trellis system with one cordon wire and two moveable foliage wires, cane pruned and hand harvested to ensure the best quality fruit. Joel Trist, winemaker, gained vital knowledge about Sangiovese whilst visiting Tuscany during the 2018 vintage, bringing authentic Italian winemaking techniques to this cool climate Yarra Valley expression.

Vintage Conditions

The 2022 vintage in the Yarra Valley produced exceptional conditions for Sangiovese, resulting in wines with complex nose of dark cherries, blood plums and liquorice. Queenstown Vineyards was established in 1991 by Gary and Louise Trist in St Andrews, part of the Yarra Valley approximately 40 kilometres east of Melbourne, classified as a cool climate wine growing region. The vineyard occupies approximately 2.13 hectares at 180m above sea level with general north-to-north westerly aspect. The topography ensures drainage of cold air during frost risk periods, with vine rows oriented north-south to take advantage of sunlight inception in this cool climate vineyard. The surrounding area provides protection from prevailing winds, creating ideal conditions for Sangiovese with note of forest floor and dried herbs. Gary Trist, viticulturist and winemaker with Masters in Wine Science and Viticulture from University of Melbourne, designed a state of the art Gravity Flow Winery. The 2022 vintage showcases the perfect match with Mediterranean food character that defines Buttermans Track Sangiovese as an outstanding expression of cool climate Australian winemaking.
