Winemaking Notes
Bollinger Special Cuvée NV Champagne is a masterful blend of 60% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay, and 15% Pinot Meunier, with over 85% of the fruit sourced from Grands and Premiers Crus vineyards. The high percentage of Pinot Noir ensures a full-bodied, rich style that defines the Bollinger house character, whilst the addition of 5 to 10% reserve wines—each aged up to fifteen years in magnums under cork—adds remarkable complexity and depth to the final blend. The wine undergoes traditional méthode champenoise production, with extended ageing on lees contributing to its distinctive yeasty nose and dry, toasty character in the mouth. This meticulous approach to blending and ageing results in a champagne of great length and perfect balance, showcasing the expertise and craftsmanship that has defined Bollinger for over a century. The wine displays exceptional structure and refinement, with the reserve wines providing layers of complexity that elevate this non-vintage expression to extraordinary heights.
Vintage Conditions
As a non-vintage champagne, Bollinger Special Cuvée represents the house's commitment to consistency and excellence through the art of blending across multiple vintages. The name "Special Cuvée" itself dates back to 1911, when Georges Bollinger's British agent suggested the English spelling without an accent, believing the French expression "Brut sans année" was no match for such a subtle champagne. More than a hundred years later, this name still symbolises both Bollinger's expertise and its rich history. The blend draws upon fruit from exceptional vineyard sites across Champagne's finest Grands and Premiers Crus, with each vintage contributing its unique characteristics to create a harmonious and complex expression. The careful selection of base wines, combined with the integration of aged reserve wines, ensures that Special Cuvée maintains its signature style year after year—a champagne worthy of Madame Lily Bollinger's famous words: "I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad."
