Veuve Clicquot is one of the most recognised and celebrated Champagne houses in the world, founded in Reims in 1772 and shaped by the vision of one of history's most remarkable entrepreneurs. The house's iconic Yellow Label Brut is a benchmark non-vintage Champagne by which many others are measured, and its prestige cuvée La Grande Dame — named in honour of the woman who transformed the house — is among the most celebrated Champagnes produced by any house.

The Story of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot

When her husband François Clicquot died in 1805, leaving her a widow at 27, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin made the extraordinary decision to take over the business herself — at a time when women in commerce were virtually unheard of. The word veuve is French for widow, and it is in her honour that the house bears its name.

Her contribution to Champagne was revolutionary. In 1816, she and her cellar master Antoine Müller developed the remuage — the riddling process — a technique of gradually rotating and tilting bottles to collect sediment in the neck for clean removal. This innovation transformed Champagne production and remains the foundation of the méthode champenoise to this day. She also pioneered international distribution, sending the first shipment to Russia in 1814 and establishing Veuve Clicquot as a global brand long before globalisation was a concept.

The Yellow Label's consistency across every release is achieved through the masterful use of reserve wines, typically 25–40% of the blend, drawn from a library spanning multiple vintages. The house's cellars extend for 24 kilometres beneath Reims, carved from the chalk that defines the region's character, maintaining the constant temperature required for slow, patient ageing.

The Range

Yellow Label Brut NV — The house's signature non-vintage Champagne. A blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier incorporating a significant proportion of reserve wines, delivering the consistency, balance and toasty complexity that has made it one of the world's most recognised Champagnes. Available in 750mL and Magnum.

Rosé NV — A Champagne of striking character and genuine depth. Coppery-orange in colour with expressive red fruit aromas and a full-bodied, structured palate — one of the most distinctive rosé Champagnes produced by any house.

Rich NV — Designed to be served over ice with fresh ingredients. A generous dosage and fruit-forward style that invites creativity and works equally well as an aperitif or a long drink.

Vintage Brut — Produced only in exceptional years, with extended lees ageing and partial oak cask maturation developing extraordinary complexity. Ageing potential of more than 15 years.

La Grande Dame — The prestige cuvée and pinnacle of the range, named in honour of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot Ponsardin. Produced only in exceptional vintages from the house's finest parcels, with a blend dominated by Pinot Noir. One of the most celebrated Champagnes in the world.

Terroir & Winemaking

Veuve Clicquot sources grapes from across Champagne's most prestigious crus, with a particular emphasis on Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims — the variety that provides the backbone and red fruit character that defines the house style. Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs contributes finesse and mineral precision, while Pinot Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne adds roundness and approachability.

Serving & Food Pairing

Serve at 8–10°C in a tulip glass or white wine glass. Yellow Label pairs naturally with oysters, smoked salmon and seafood. Rosé with strawberry desserts, salmon and soft cheeses. Rich over ice in a large glass with fresh fruit and herbs. Vintage and La Grande Dame reward patience and pair with more substantial dishes — lobster, fine poultry, aged cheeses.
