History & Legacy
Robert Mondavi was born in 1913 to Italian immigrant parents in Virginia, Minnesota, and grew up in the wine country of California's Central Valley. After studying economics at Stanford University, he joined his family's wine business and quickly became one of the most passionate and restless advocates for quality California wine the industry had ever seen.
In 1966, following a celebrated falling-out with his family at the Charles Krug Winery, Mondavi struck out on his own and established the Robert Mondavi Winery in Oakville, Napa Valley — the first winery of its kind in the valley in decades. His vision was audacious: to produce wines that could stand alongside the finest of Bordeaux and Burgundy. He travelled extensively in Europe, studying the great estates, and returned to California with a determination to apply Old World rigour to New World fruit.
Mondavi pioneered the use of cold fermentation for white wines, introduced stainless steel tanks to California, championed the use of French oak barrels, and was instrumental in establishing the Napa Valley appellation as a legally recognised wine region. His 1979 joint venture with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild — producing the iconic Opus One — was a defining moment that announced California's arrival on the world stage. Robert Mondavi passed away in 2008, but his influence on American wine is immeasurable and enduring.

Cabernet Sauvignon is California's most celebrated red variety and the grape that put Napa Valley on the world map.
