History & Heritage
All Saints Estate was founded in 1864 by George Sutherland Smith and John Banks — two Scottish immigrants who had arrived in Australia from Caithness, in the far north of Scotland, in 1852. The pair settled in the Wahgunyah district of North East Victoria, drawn by the fertile soils and reliable water supply of the Murray River, and set about establishing what would become one of the region's most celebrated and enduring wine estates.
The estate's most remarkable physical feature — and one of the most extraordinary structures in the Australian wine industry — is its castle, which George Sutherland Smith and John Banks constructed entirely by hand from locally fired bricks. Modelled on the castles of their Scottish homeland, the All Saints castle is a testament to the determination, craftsmanship, and ambition of the estate's founders, and it remains today one of the most iconic and photographed buildings in Australian wine country. The castle houses the estate's cellar door, restaurant, and wine museum, and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
The estate passed through several generations of the Sutherland Smith family before being acquired by Peter R. Brown — one of the Brown Brothers of Milawa — who invested significantly in the property and its winemaking programme. Following Peter's sudden passing in November 2005, the estate was inherited by his three children: Eliza Brown (CEO), Angela Brown (Sales and Marketing Director), and Nicholas Brown (Winemaker and General Manager). The Brown siblings have continued to play a role at Brown Brothers, with part ownership of that business, while independently owning and operating All Saints Estate and the neighbouring St Leonards Vineyard in Wahgunyah. Under their stewardship, All Saints Estate has embraced a contemporary approach to winemaking while honouring the extraordinary heritage and traditions of one of Australia's oldest wine estates.

All Saints Estate is located in Wahgunyah, on the banks of the Murray River in the Rutherglen wine region of North East Victoria — one of Australia's most historically significant and climatically distinctive wine-producing areas. The Rutherglen region is celebrated above all for its extraordinary fortified wines — the Muscats and Topaques that are widely regarded as among the greatest dessert wines produced anywhere in the world — but the region also produces a range of distinctive table wines that reflect the warmth, richness, and generosity of the North East Victorian climate.
The Rutherglen region's climate is warm and continental — hot summers, mild winters, and low annual rainfall — with the moderating influence of the Murray River providing some relief from the summer heat and contributing to the region's distinctive microclimate. The region's ancient red loam soils over clay and gravel are well-drained and mineral-rich, producing grapes of exceptional concentration and character. The combination of warm climate, ancient soils, and the Murray River's moderating influence creates ideal conditions for producing the rich, full-bodied red wines and extraordinary fortified wines for which Rutherglen is celebrated.
The region's most distinctive red wine variety is Durif — a variety of French origin (also known as Petite Sirah) that has found its greatest expression in Rutherglen's warm climate and ancient soils. Rutherglen Durif produces wines of extraordinary depth, colour, and concentration — inky, powerful, and structured, with dark fruit, chocolate, and earth, and the firm tannins that allow the wines to age magnificently for a decade or more. All Saints Estate Moscato — A delightfully fresh and lively expression of the Moscato style, made from grapes of the Muscat family — a variety whose name is believed to have been given by the Romans, who found its distinctive aroma akin to that of musk. How to Enjoy All Saints Estate Wines
The Moscato is best served well chilled at 6–8°C — a natural partner for fresh fruit, light desserts, soft cheeses, and warm-weather occasions. The Shiraz Durif is best served at 16–18°C in a generous red wine glass and rewards decanting for 30–60 minutes to open its full aromatic complexity — outstanding with slow-roasted lamb, beef short rib, aged hard cheeses, and hearty winter dishes.
