Mitolo Jester Shiraz 2021 features dominant plum and blackberry flavours, accompanied by hints of chocolate on the nose. Subtle notes of clove and green peppercorn spice add complexity. On the palate, the plum, blackberry, and spice flavours are joined by both dark and red cherries. The soft tannin structure perfectly complements the medium-bodied palate. A delicate acidity maintains balance throughout, while the finish reveals nuanced hints of fine herbs.

"Great value McLaren Vale Shiraz from a sensational vintage. After a cool fermentation, the wine spent 14 months in a mix of French (75%) and American (25%) oak hogsheads. We have notes of mocha, spices, plums, coffee beans, chocolate, blackberries, tobacco leaves and aniseed. A richly flavoured palate, which is really rather attractive. Good focus, balance and length with silky tannins. There is generosity and richness here. Cracking value. Enjoy over the next six to ten years. There can be a reluctance to give wines at lower price points high scores, but this one deserves it."
93 Points - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot, March 2024

"It's gorgeously ripe and inviting on the nose with blackberry, game, warm spice and roasted hazelnut aromas. The palate is equally satisfying with excellent weight and silky texture, well framed by finely infused tannins, offering delectable drinking. At its best: now to 2031."
93 Points - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2024

"It was a marvellous year in McLaren Vale with wines even at the lower price point showing remarkably vibrant and flavoursome characters. This is generous but in the medium body zone with plump black and slightly blue fruits. The palate is plush and seamlessly smooth, cascading a wave of delicious fruit through to a pleasing finish."
92 Points - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot, February 2023

"2021 is a superb vintage and its beauty shines through the wines, from entry level to top-drawer. All the classic signatures of fine shiraz, fresher and cooler climatic of feel than its origins suggests, even at this approachable line. Blue fruits, lilac and nori. Perfumed, mid-weighted and brisk. Perfectly judged. It would be hard to find better value, irrespective of origin. Drink or hold."
92 Points - Ned Goodwin MW, jamessuckling.com, August 2023

Winery & Vintage Info

The life of the party, the instigator of frivolity, the undying entertainer. A modern-day jester gathers friends around regularly to eat and drink well, and much like their medieval predecessors, reminds us that life shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

De-stemmed and crushed for fermentation in 8 tonne potter fermenters with twice daily pump overs, and larger vinomatics under a gentle extraction regime. Temperatures were kept cool, between 20 and 24ËšC to retain fruit vibrancy and ensure a soft tannin structure. The ferment was pressed off at approximately 1 Baume to finish in stainless steel tank, before natural malolactic fermentation and maturation in 75% French and 25% American Oak Hogs Head Barrels for 14 months. The wine is un-fined and underwent light filtration prior to bottling.

Located at the southern tip of McLaren Vale on the foothills of the Mt Lofty Ranges. The site is defined by its red-brown clay loam soils, atop Christies Beach formation. Shattered rock appears throughout the profile, becoming more prevalent at its base. A north-westerly aspect captures ample sunlight and ensures ripening and plush tannin maturity in the fruit, whilst strong gully winds from the Ranges cool the vineyard into the evening.
