The 2021 Maxwell Ellen Street Shiraz presents a deep purple colour, accompanied by a lush aroma of blackberry and dark cherry, with subtle hints of oak and florals. On the palate, the flavours of blackberry and cherry are generously layered, with a subtle touch of raspberry and balanced with chalky tannins. The oak notes linger on the finish, providing a lengthy and complex taste. For a more enhanced experience, consider decanting this wine.

Winery & Vintage Info

The Maxwell winery is located on the south-facing slope of a solid limestone hill in the heart of McLaren Vale. This limestone provides excellent drainage, creating an environment perfect for shiraz vineyards of the highest quality.

Quintessentially McLaren Vale Shiraz, the Maxwell Ellen Street Shiraz 2021 is harvested from a small vineyard of craggy, gnarled Shiraz vines planted in 1953 on the soils of an old riverbed.

This block is situated between the winery and the road running along our southern boundary, known for over 100 years as Ellen Street.

Every year these vines bear some of the most concentrated fruit on the estate, however in very small quantities, with an average crop of less than 2 tonnes per acre.

McLaren Vale's 2021 vintage was high yielding of great quality. We believe that the quality levels were some of the best in twenty years. A mild winter and sunny conditions saw good bud-burst and flowering around October. Two rain events in late January and early February were enough to freshen the leaves prior to harvest.

18 months in old French and American oak, approximately 25% new barrels. Will mature for a further 10+ years if cellared correctly.
