Why Kalleske Matters
Kalleske is one of Australia’s leading organic and biodynamic wine producers and the oldest certified organic and biodynamic estate in the Barossa Valley. Farming continuously at Greenock since 1853, the family combines generations of vineyard stewardship with a commitment to sustainable viticulture, estate-grown fruit and minimal-intervention winemaking. With old-vine Shiraz, Grenache and other Barossa varieties sourced exclusively from the family estate, Kalleske has become a benchmark producer for certified organic and biodynamic wines in Australia.

The Estate
The Kalleske family has farmed at Moppa, Greenock in the North-Western Barossa Valley since 1853, when Johann Georg Kalleske established the property after migrating from Prussia. The 120-acre estate is planted to Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Mataro, Petit Verdot, Durif, Viognier, Tempranillo and Zinfandel. Vines average 50 years of age, with the oldest surviving block — the source of Johann Georg Shiraz — dating to 1875.
In 2002, seventh-generation Barossan Troy Kalleske established the Kalleske winery, making the first Kalleske wine after 149 years of family grape growing. The first wines were released in 2004. Troy was awarded Barossa Winemaker of the Year by the Barons of Barossa in 2008.
Organic & Biodynamic Farming
Kalleske has been certified organic and biodynamic since 1998 — the oldest certified organic and biodynamic vineyard and winery in the Barossa. Organic and biodynamic farming means no synthetic chemicals or artificial fertilisers, natural weed and pest management, biodynamic preparations applied to soil and vines, and farming guided by lunar and cosmic rhythms.
In the winery, Kalleske continues the natural approach: wild yeast fermentation, natural malolactic fermentation, no added tannins or fining agents, and gravity clarification without filtration. The winery is solar powered and water self-sufficient, capturing rainwater from farm sheds.
Old Vine Range
The pinnacle of the Kalleske estate, sourced from the oldest vineyards on the property.
- Johann Georg Shiraz — single vineyard, vines planted 1875. Named after the first Kalleske ancestor to migrate to Australia. Open-top fermented, basket pressed, matured two years in French and American hogsheads.
- Eduard Shiraz — sourced from three blocks planted between 1905 and 1973. Named after Karl Heinrich Eduard Kalleske. Intense, powerful, full-bodied old vine Barossa Shiraz.
- Old Vine Grenache — from the oldest Grenache vines on the estate, planted 1935. Dry grown, open-top fermented, matured in seasoned hogsheads.

Single vineyard and estate wines expressing the full character of the Kalleske property: Greenock Shiraz, Moppa Shiraz, Merchant Cabernet Sauvignon, Clarry’s GSM, Buckboard Durif, Florentine Chenin Blanc, Elenore Semillon, Fordson Zinfandel, Stryker Petit Verdot and Rosina Rosé.
Experimental Range
Minimal intervention wines exploring the boundaries of the estate’s varieties: Plenarius Viognier (skin contact, no sulphites), Parallax Grenache (early harvest, whole bunch), Zeitgeist Shiraz (unoaked, wild fermented), CCCLXV Durif (365 days on skins) and Lorraine Semscato.
