Innocent Bystander
Cool-climate Yarra Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with genuine regional character
About
Innocent Bystander is a Yarra Valley wine producer making cool-climate wines with a distinctly modern character — precise, expressive, and built around variety and place rather than winemaking intervention. Founded in the Yarra Valley and now part of the Brown Brothers family, Innocent Bystander has built a reputation for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Syrah that genuinely reflect the cool, elevated conditions of one of Victoria's most celebrated wine regions.
The range extends across the Yarra Valley and King Valley, with each wine made to express the character of its origin rather than conform to a house style. Innocent Bystander is the kind of producer that rewards attention — wines that are easy to drink young but built with enough structure and acidity to develop in the cellar.

History
2004–2016 — Innocent Bystander operates under the Giant Steps umbrella in the Yarra Valley, with Steve Flamsteed shaping the brand's signature style — wild yeast fermentation, minimal intervention, vibrant acidity, and a focus on cool-climate variety expression across Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Syrah. The Healesville cellar door — combining a winery, bakery, and pizzeria — becomes one of the most visited and influential cellar door experiences in Australia.
2016 — Brown Family Wine Group acquires Innocent Bystander and the former White Rabbit brewery site in Healesville, announced in April and finalised on 5 May 2016. Geoff Alexander, who had joined Brown Family Wine Group in 2005, takes over direct responsibility for the Innocent Bystander portfolio across red, white, sparkling, and Moscato wines.
Today — Innocent Bystander continues to produce cool-climate wines from the Yarra Valley and King Valley under Brown Family Wine Group ownership, with Geoff Alexander leading the brand's style evolution and expanding fruit sourcing to include Tasmania. Joel Tilbrook oversees winemaking direction across the broader group portfolio.
