History

Charles-Camille Heidsieck founded the House in 1851, quickly earning the moniker "Champagne Charlie" for his flamboyant personality and pioneering spirit in promoting Champagne across America during the 1850s. His adventures became legendary—he survived the American Civil War, during which he was imprisoned as a suspected spy, and later recovered a fortune through land compensation that saved the House from ruin. The Maison was one of the first to recognise Chardonnay's potential, producing its inaugural Blanc de Blancs in 1949, decades before the style gained widespread popularity. Throughout the 20th century, Charles Heidsieck garnered numerous accolades. The House's commitment to extended ageing—cellaring its wines significantly longer than appellation requirements—has become a hallmark of its style, producing Champagnes of extraordinary depth and refinement that honour Charles-Camille's original vision of uncompromising quality.
