Best's | Great Western

Established in 1866 by Henry Best, Best's Wines holds the distinction of being one of the oldest family-owned wineries in Australia, with an extraordinary legacy spanning over 150 years. The property was originally selected by Joseph Best in 1857, with his brother Henry planting the first vines in what was then known as Great Western. The winery flourished through the late 19th century, gaining recognition for producing some of Victoria's finest wines. In 1920, the Thomson family acquired the estate, and remarkably, they continue to own and operate the winery to this day. Through challenging times including phylloxera outbreaks and economic depression, the Thomsons have maintained Best's reputation for excellence whilst carefully preserving its historic character. Today, Best's remains deeply rooted in its heritage, with some of the original 1860s vines still producing fruit, making them amongst the oldest producing vines in the world and a living testament to the winery's enduring commitment to quality and tradition under five generations of Thomson family stewardship.
