4 Pines Brewing Company — Manly's Craft Beer Pioneer
4 Pines Brewing Company is one of Australia's most celebrated and beloved craft breweries — a Manly institution that has been producing beers of exceptional quality, character, and creativity since its founding on Sydney's Northern Beaches. With a philosophy built on sourcing the finest hops, malt, and yeast, an unwavering commitment to craft, and a genuine passion for the art of brewing, 4 Pines has earned a devoted following of beer enthusiasts across Australia and beyond — and a trophy cabinet that includes some of the most prestigious awards in the Australian craft beer industry.
History & Philosophy
4 Pines was founded in Manly, New South Wales — one of Sydney's most iconic and vibrant beachside communities — with a simple but powerful vision: to brew beers of genuine quality and character that reflected the spirit of the place and the people who called it home. The brewery takes its name from the four Norfolk Island pine trees that are a defining feature of the Manly beachfront — a symbol of the brewery's deep connection to its community and its place.
From its earliest days, 4 Pines distinguished itself through a commitment to quality ingredients and traditional brewing techniques, combined with a restless creative spirit that has produced some of the most innovative and celebrated beers in the Australian craft beer scene. The brewery's Keller Door range — named for the German tradition of the brewery's own cellar door, where the freshest and most experimental beers are poured directly from the tank — represents the creative heart of the 4 Pines operation, showcasing styles and ingredients that push the boundaries of Australian craft brewing.
4 Pines is now part of the Kirin group, which has provided the resources and reach to grow the brewery's distribution and production while preserving the craft philosophy and creative independence that made it great. The brewery continues to operate from its Manly home, with additional brewing capacity at its Brookvale facility, and remains one of the most respected and innovative craft breweries in Australia.
The Beers
Keller Door Schwarzbier Dark Lager — A classical dark German lager of exceptional craft and character, balancing roasted yet smooth malt flavours with moderate hop bitterness. Brewed with Target and Hersbrucker hops and Munich 2 and Carafa Special malts — a combination that produces the characteristic dark colour, roasted malt complexity, and clean, crisp lager finish of the traditional Schwarzbier style. A beer of genuine sophistication and drinkability that demonstrates 4 Pines' mastery of classic European styles. Australian Champion Beer Trophy, Australian International Beer Awards 2019.
Dingo Pup Trans-Pacific Pale Ale — A special collaboration between 4 Pines Brewing in Sydney and Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles — brewed on the same day, in both cities, with the same recipe, using Australian Galaxy hops from this side of the Pacific and American El Dorado hops from the other. The result is a Trans-Pacific Pale Ale of juicy, candy-like watermelon and bubblegum character that captures the spirit of two great craft brewing cultures in a single, celebratory glass.
Keller Door Nectaron Double IPA — A bold and intensely aromatic Double India Pale Ale showcasing Nectaron — one of New Zealand's most exciting and celebrated new hop varieties, prized for its extraordinary tropical fruit and citrus character. At 8.5% ABV and 70 IBU, this is a beer of genuine power and complexity, delivering ripe tropical fruits and vibrant citrus in abundance, with the firm bitterness and full body that define the Double IPA style at its finest.
How to Enjoy 4 Pines Beers
The Schwarzbier is best served at 6–8°C in a traditional German Stange or a clean pint glass — a natural partner for grilled meats, bratwurst, pretzels, and aged cheeses. The Trans-Pacific Pale Ale is best served at 4–6°C and is outstanding with spicy food, grilled chicken, fish tacos, and the full range of casual outdoor dining. The Nectaron Double IPA is best served at 8–10°C in a tulip glass that concentrates its extraordinary tropical hop aromatics — a beer to be savoured slowly, outstanding with strong cheeses, spicy Asian cuisine, and rich, flavourful dishes that can stand up to its intensity.
