Tasting Notes

Appearance

This distinguished Ténarèze Armagnac presents a deep, rich amber colour with warm mahogany depth and brilliant clarity, displaying the exceptional quality characteristic of over four decades of patient ageing in oak barrels — a rare and quite special expression from the Ténarèze region, where limestone and clay soils produce Armagnac of exceptional power and complexity, crafted by the Delord family at their distillery in Lannepax.

Aroma

The nose is complex and immediately captivating, with fruits of kirsch, cherry plum-Mirabelle, almond and cherry stone creating a sophisticated and beautifully layered aromatic profile of genuine distinction. This extraordinary bouquet reflects the unique character of the Ténarèze terroir — more powerful and structured than the sandier soils of Bas-Armagnac — and the extraordinary patience and expertise of the Delord family and their prized Sier Armagnac alambics that produce less than 30 litres of eau-de-vie per hour.

Palate

Bitter orange and liquorice take centre stage on the palate, delivering a long, mellow finish of exceptional depth and complexity. The hallmark Delord style — very rounded, soft and easy to drink — is beautifully evident, with the Ténarèze limestone-clay terroir adding a distinctive power and structure that sets this 1979 expression apart from more conventional Armagnac. A spirit of genuine rarity and distinction.

Pairs With

This exceptional Ténarèze Armagnac is a natural companion to dark chocolate, kirsch-soaked cherries, almond tart, bitter orange desserts, dried Mirabelle plums, or enjoyed as a contemplative digestif after a very special meal, making it the ultimate gift for those born in 1979 and a truly rare addition to any serious spirits collection.

Production Notes

Delord Armagnac Ténarèze 1979 700mL is produced at the family distillery in Lannepax using Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche grape varieties. Distillation — the most essential and fascinating stage in Armagnac production — takes place from the beginning of November through to the end of December, using the family’s treasured old Sier Armagnac alambics that produce less than 30 litres of eau-de-vie per hour. The eau-de-vie is then aged in one of more than 700 oak barrels in Delord’s cellars, which protect and age Armagnac dating from the 20th century to the present day. This vintage is a quite special expression from the Ténarèze region — a rarity in Australia, where most Armagnac expressions are from Bas-Armagnac. With limestone and clay soils rather than the sandier soils of other regions, Ténarèze distillate is generally more powerful and benefits from longer ageing, resulting in a spirit of exceptional depth, structure and complexity.

History

The 1979 vintage Armagnac from Delord represents a rare and exceptional piece of French spirits heritage from the distinguished Ténarèze appellation. Ténarèze — situated in the heart of the Armagnac region — is renowned for producing eau-de-vie of exceptional power, structure and longevity, with its limestone and clay soils imparting a distinctive character that sets it apart from the more widely seen Bas-Armagnac expressions. Thanks to Delord’s extraordinary vision in storing exceptional Armagnacs for such extended periods, the 1979 vintage has had over four decades to develop its remarkable complexity of kirsch, Mirabelle, almond, cherry stone, bitter orange and liquorice — a living testament to the patience, expertise and heritage of the Delord family and the unique terroir of the Ténarèze appellation.
