Beenleigh Artisan Distillers — Australia's Oldest Registered Distillery

Beenleigh Artisan Rum is more than just a rum — it is a tribute to bold Australian enterprise, the pioneering spirit of the men and women who built this country, and the stuff that legends are truly made of. As Australia's oldest registered distillery, Beenleigh has been crafting rum of genuine character and quality from the banks of the Albert River in Queensland since 1865 — a heritage of over 160 years that makes it one of the most historically significant spirits producers in the Southern Hemisphere.

History & Heritage

The story of Beenleigh begins in 1865, when two Englishmen — John Davy and Francis Gooding, hailing from Devonshire — acquired 300 acres of land along the Albert River in what is now southeast Queensland. They christened the area ‘Beenleigh’ in fond remembrance of their farm back home in Devon, and set about establishing what they initially planned to be a cotton plantation. Serendipity, however, had other plans — the land proved far better suited to sugar cane, and it was this fortuitous pivot that set the stage for one of the great chapters in Australian spirits history.

Legend has it that during this era, a figure known as James Stewart — or ‘The Bosun’ — was navigating the waters of the Albert River with a vision for something greater. As fate intertwined the paths of these pioneers, the legacy of Beenleigh Artisan Rum began to take shape. The fusion of expertise, dedication, and a touch of destiny culminated in the birth of a spirit that would endure for over a century and a half — a spirit that embodies the resilience, innovation, and unwavering commitment to craft that defines the best of Australian enterprise.

The distillery was formally registered in 1884, making it the oldest continuously registered distillery in Australia — a distinction that places it in extraordinarily rare company on the world stage. Over the generations, Beenleigh has survived floods, fires, economic downturns, and the upheavals of two world wars, emerging each time with its commitment to quality and its connection to the Queensland sugar cane tradition intact. Today, Beenleigh Artisan Distillers continues to produce rum of genuine craft and character, honouring the legacy of its founders while embracing the artisan philosophy and contemporary approach that has made it one of Australia's most celebrated and distinctive spirits producers.

Queensland Sugar Cane & The Art of Rum Making

Rum is the spirit of sugar cane — distilled from molasses, the rich, dark byproduct of the sugar refining process, or in some cases directly from fresh sugar cane juice. Queensland is one of the world's great sugar cane-growing regions, with the warm, humid climate of the state's coastal lowlands producing sugar cane of exceptional quality and sugar content. Beenleigh's rums are crafted from local Queensland molasses — a direct connection to the sugar cane heritage that has defined the region since the 1860s — blended with fresh rainwater and distilled by expert craftspeople who have inherited and refined the techniques of their predecessors over more than 150 years.

The distillery's production process combines traditional methods with contemporary artisan philosophy. The molasses is fermented using carefully selected yeast strains before being distilled in copper pot stills that have been central to the Beenleigh operation for generations. The resulting spirit is then matured in a combination of historic kauri pine vats, ex-Australian brandy vats, and ex-bourbon casks — a unique combination of maturation vessels that imparts the distinctive character, warmth, and complexity that defines the Beenleigh range.

Our Range

Beenleigh White Rum 700mL — The purest expression of the Beenleigh distillery's craft — a specialist blend using local Queensland molasses and fresh rainwater, crafted to showcase the natural character of the spirit without the influence of extended oak maturation. Crystal clear with brilliant clarity. Tropical floral notes, vanilla, coconut, and subtle spices on both the nose and palate, with exceptional balance and a smooth, clean finish. The essential cocktail rum — outstanding in a classic Daiquiri, Mojito, or Pina Colada, and equally at home with fresh lime, tropical fruit juices, and soda water.

Beenleigh Gold Rum 700mL — Expertly blended and matured in ex-Australian brandy vats and bourbon barrels to develop the warm golden amber colour and the gentle oak complexity that distinguishes a Gold Rum from its unaged counterpart. Tropical fruit, floral, and toasted oak aromas on the nose. Smooth hints of caramel and burnt sugar on the palate with a warm, satisfying finish. Outstanding with cola, ginger beer, and tropical fruit juices, or sipped slowly over ice to appreciate its full character.

Beenleigh Australian Spiced Rum 700mL — Carefully aged in ex-brandy vats before being expertly blended with aromatic spices and vanilla to create a rum of rich, warming character and genuine complexity. Rich amber with warm golden highlights. Rich, warming aromas of aromatic spices and vanilla on the nose. The palate delivers the same warming spice and vanilla character with exceptional balance, and the finish is slow and thoughtful — a rum that rewards sipping. Outstanding with ginger beer and lime, dark chocolate, spiced cakes, and sticky toffee pudding.

Beenleigh Double Cask Rum 700mL — The pinnacle of the Beenleigh range — a blend of five aged rums, each matured for five years in a unique combination of historic kauri pine vats, Australian brandy vats, and ex-bourbon casks. Rich amber with warm mahogany highlights. Smooth caramel notes and spiced oak tones on the nose and palate, with exceptional balance and complexity and a smooth, exquisite finish. A rum of genuine depth and sophistication — outstanding neat, over a single large ice cube, or as the foundation of a premium rum cocktail. Pairs magnificently with dark chocolate, sticky toffee pudding, aged cheddar, smoked dishes, and premium cigars.

How to Enjoy Beenleigh Rum

The White Rum is the essential cocktail base — the foundation of a perfect Daiquiri (White Rum, fresh lime juice, sugar syrup), Mojito (White Rum, fresh mint, lime, sugar, soda), or Pina Colada (White Rum, coconut cream, pineapple juice). The Gold Rum is outstanding in a classic Rum & Cola or Dark & Stormy (Gold Rum, ginger beer, lime), and equally rewarding over ice. The Spiced Rum is magnificent in a Spiced Rum Mule (Spiced Rum, ginger beer, lime) or sipped neat at room temperature. The Double Cask is best savoured slowly — neat or over a single large ice cube — to appreciate the full depth and complexity of five years of careful maturation in three different cask types.
