Yarra Valley Wines - Victoria's Premier Wine Region

The Yarra Valley is Victoria's oldest and most celebrated wine region, located just 45 kilometres east of Melbourne's CBD. As Australia's premier cool-climate wine region, the Yarra Valley produces world-class wines that rival the finest from Burgundy and Champagne, with great value offerings across our carefully curated selection.

Wine Region Overview

Established in 1838, the Yarra Valley spans a diverse landscape with elevations ranging from 50 metres to 1,250 metres above sea level, influenced by the Great Dividing Range. This spectacular variation in altitude creates distinct mesoclimates and terroirs, allowing winemakers to craft wines of remarkable complexity and elegance. The region encompasses over 80 wineries across approximately 5,500 hectares of vineyards, making it one of Australia's most important fine wine regions.

Climate & Terroir

The Yarra Valley enjoys a cool, temperate climate characterised by significant rainfall during winter and spring (averaging 900-1,200mm annually), followed by dry but cool summers. Maritime influences from Port Phillip Bay moderate temperatures, whilst the surrounding mountain ranges provide protection and create temperature variations between day and night. This diurnal shift preserves natural acidity and allows grapes to ripen slowly, developing intense flavours whilst maintaining freshness and elegance.

The region's diverse soil profiles include ancient grey and red volcanic loams, deep alluvial soils along river flats, and gravelly clay loams on hillside sites. These varied soils, combined with different aspects and elevations, enable the production of distinctive wine styles across sub-regions including the Upper Yarra, Warburton, Seville, Coldstream, and Healesville.

Signature Varieties

The Yarra Valley is renowned for elegant, cool-climate varieties that express remarkable finesse and ageability. Pinot Noir is the region's flagship red, producing wines with bright red fruit characters, silky tannins, and savoury complexity. Chardonnay thrives here, yielding wines ranging from tight, mineral-driven styles to richer, textured expressions with stone fruit and subtle oak integration.

Sparkling wines crafted using traditional mΓ©thode champenoise rival the finest from France, with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay creating refined, age-worthy sparklings with fine bead and complex brioche notes. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz produce medium-bodied reds with elegance and structure, whilst Merlot offers plush, approachable styles.

Aromatic whites including Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, and Riesling showcase the region's ability to retain vibrant acidity and expressive aromatics. Small plantings of Nebbiolo, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese demonstrate the valley's versatility for alternative varieties.

Wine Styles & Food Pairing

Yarra Valley wines are celebrated for their elegance, balance, and food-friendly nature. The region's Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with duck, mushroom dishes, and charcuterie, whilst Chardonnay complements seafood, roasted chicken, and creamy pasta. Sparkling wines are perfect for celebrations or as an aperitif, and the region's Cabernet blends match wonderfully with lamb and aged cheeses.
