Howard Park Miamup Chardonnay 2019 (Margaret River)

The 2019 Howard Park Miamup Chardonnay whilst a little shy, even cryptic, the bouquet is delightfully complex with notes of stone fruit, roasted hazelnuts, beurre bosc pears, pink grapefruit, patisserie, honeysuckle and citrus blossom. The palate delivers great texture, flavour and presence in a lively and light frame, with a fine balance of generous fruit, subtle oak, and a refined mineral–like acidity. Immediately drinkable yet with lots of nuance and layers of flavour and complexity that will reveal over the next few years.

The Howard Park story started in 1986 when John Wade crafted a Riesling and Cabernet to stand the test of time. John left his prestigious posting in the Coonawarra after seeing enormous potential in the budding Great Southern wine region. His friend and fellow wine lover Jeff Burch joined in partnership seven years later, purchasing cornerstone land parcels, constructing a winery and cellar door and entwining his family with Howard Park’s future.

Howard Park has been a pioneering West Australian winery since 1986, as one of the earliest adopters of multi-regional fruit sourcing; a champion of the cool-climate Great Southern wine region and the world-renowned Margaret River. The result is the work of heritage and family -more than three decades handcrafting wines of provenance and elegance.

Growing pristine fruit in two regions is the strongest belief and passion of the Burch family, and will be forever woven into Howard Park history. Margaret River and the Great Southern are quite simply West Australia’s premier grape-growing regions, and the epitome of quality from this part of the country. This duality distinguishes Howard Park from all other Australian wineries, with exceeding excellence displayed on the world stage. Howard Park’s winemakers create true wine expressions by using only the best parcels of fruit. No other winery has committed the last 30 years to developing their vital fruit source in the same way.

As the substantially wet winter brought a close to the 2018 season, a mild and wet spring heralded the start of 2019. The summer high pressure systems associated with warm day time temperatures were struggling to impact, as early growth was moderated by moist and cool conditions. Heat summation comparisons over the vintages of the past decade did indicate a delayed start to the vintage as the summer remained warm and devoid of heat spikes.

With yields looking low to moderate, optimism was winning the mental arm wrestle over pessimism as vintage commenced in mid to late February at the close of summer. The majority of white varietals were picked over a protracted period from early to late March, in dry conditions. Some fungal disease did proliferate which required an extra degree of care and attention at harvest.

These moderate conditions continued through autumn as the reds began to trickle in from mid-April. Rain in mid-April bothered the vines little yet bird pressure and early autumn control burns remained imminent threats. For all the trials and tribulations that vintage brings, the quality outcomes from 2019 are good. The whites have retained purity and vibrancy which is always a signature of the slightly cooler years while the reds show a concentration of flavour, elegance, definition and supple tannins.

All of the individual vineyards that contribute to Miamup Chardonnay are vinified separately. Each batch is hand-picked at between 12.2 to 12.5 oBe and cooled overnight before sorting and whole bunch pressing to extract the free run juice. Primary and malolactic fermentation occurs in a combination of new and older French oak. Temperature of fermentation is controlled between 18oC to 22oC and the lees are stirred regularly from the end of fermentation and throughout the malolactic. After 7 months in barrel, the wine was blended then fined and filtered before bottling. Winery Notes
