Always a multi-regional blend - in more recent years a combination of Grampians and Heathcote fruit - Chalambar demonstrates a great balance of violets, pepper and spice alongside raspberry and mulberry fruits and well integrated cedary oak, highlighting the benefits of blending these distinctive wine regions. The result is a style that is approachable upon release with the structure to age gracefully if carefully cellared.Deep red with garnet hues. Fragrant red and blue fruits, violets and spice with a hint of Dutch liquorice. Raspberry and mulberry fruits combined with spice and a mineral texture are supported by supple, fleshy tannins and well integrated cedary oak.

Reviews & Accolades

"A wine I once quite judiciously cellared at one point. It’s a blend of Heathcote and Grampians. Heathcote bringing earthy tannin and savouriness to the body of ‘prettier’ Grampians fruit used here. This wine punches well above its weight. Superb release. Would make many people’s ‘best value wine of 2017’ kind of lists – one of those gems.

Exotic spice, blue berries, mulberry and briary character. Really pretty almost floral-esque perfume. Succulent and medium weight, drinkability is through the roof, as is the spicy character of the wine, and flavours are set to just ripe berry fruitiness and black olive-like savoury-herbal character. Tannins are firm and fine, shapely and, again, succulent. There’s a feel of subtle dilution to the shape and flavours, but by-the-by in this very fine drink – showing almost a ‘pinosity’. This will cellar well too I suspect."

A dry winter was followed by mild spring conditions, resulting in healthy fruit set. Summer was cooler than average, with generally fine conditions, resulting in moderate yields and delicate wines with intense flavour.

Premium parcels of Shiraz from the Grampians and Heathcote were fermented on skins for an average of 8 days, then matured in a combination of 225 L French oak barriques (80%) and 3000 L seasoned French oak vats (20%) for 12 months. Overall 22% new French oak.
