SC Pannell Syrah 2018 (Adelaide Hills)
The 2018 SC Pannell Adelaide Hills Syrah is consistently, a highly perfumed, vibrant and complex nose with prominent nordic/alpine berries, all spice, sandalwood and incense. A blue fruited palate that slowly develops into violets. Super fine tannins on entry and right through the centre of the palate carrying supple fruit to a very long finish. The closest resemblance to St Joseph achieved so far and a fitting tribute to the cooler style of Shiraz. If cellared properly, will go the distance for the next fifteen years, however, without question, it is ready to drink throughout the next few years while it is youthful and fragrant. After working with this vineyard now for over 10 years this wine looks it’s best after 7 to 8 years cellaring.

Sourced from a vineyard in Echunga, 410 metres above sea level and just down the road from the first vineyard planted in South Australia. Stephen has worked with this vineyard since 2010 and in 2014 won the Jimmy Watson trophy for the 2013 vintage. The fruit is grown on well-drained, granitic soil, Stephen’s preference for Syrah. A Syrah instead of the traditional Shiraz to stop confusion and pay homage to the cool climate style made in the Northern Rhone Valley of France. Simply stated, 2018 was a solid year. A vintage without extremes that was kind to both winemakers and vines alike. The fruit had lovely freshness and vivacity, the crops were of an average size and there was a consistency throughout despite the dryness of the soil. Even the winemakers seemed to be enjoying themselves! Hand-harvested and vinified in small open-top fermenters with 30% whole bunches. A total of 12 days on skins before being sent to old, French-oak vats and puncheons for 10 months. Bottled on the 5th August 2019, 7200 bottles produced.
