Head Red Barossa Shiraz 2012
Alex Head is one of the Barossa's brightest young winemaking stars. After gaining a degree in Biochemistry, he entered the wine industry and immersed himself in all aspects. He worked vintages in various regions, and gained experience in wholesaling, retailing and the auction system, all providing a solid base of broad wine knowledge for his ultimate destination - creating Head Wines in the Barossa Valley. Head Red is an impressive, but relatively inexpensive insight into the winery's style. It's a selection of barrels which didn't make it into the final cut for his premium single vineyard labels, but Alex sets the bar high and the quality here is evident. Freshness was the term that kept coming to mind as I tasted this, not typically Barossa in a way. The nose is lifted, perfumed, full of tangy red fruit - raspberry and blood plum to the fore. The palate is no more than medium-bodied, but flavoursome and long, actually quite elegant for the region, although the Barossa "terroir" is evident. The freshness kicks in again on the finish with more acidity than tannin at the end of the palate. I really enjoyed drinking this, and I have the feeling it's going to improve over the next couple of years. A great each way bet to drink now or cellar for a bit.
