The Petaluma Hanlin Hill Riesling 2018 vintage is typical of the Petaluma style, late picked and dry with lime and orange blossom aromas.

This is a concentrated wine with intense lime, hints of chalkiness accompanied with beautifully balanced acidity and the slight presence of viscosity.

A wonderful wine to enjoy now in its youth, but as with all Petaluma Rieslings, it will be worth watching it develop for many years to come.

Winery & Vintage Info

Petaluma wines bottled under the trademark 'Yellow Label' of Petaluma are testimony to our distinguished vineyard philosophy, heritage and pioneering spirit. They showcase our primary goal of making wine crafted from the best fruit grown in the right vineyard sites for each variety.

The winter and spring leading into the 2018 vintage provided good soaking rains. This allowed the vineyard to be well positioned for the latter half of the growing season. Into late January we experienced two intense heat peaks across the state well into the low 40°C. The overall growing season was warmer than the long term average similar to 2016.

The old contour Riesling vines from the Hanlin Hill vineyard which were planted in 1968 were ready for hand harvesting on the 26th February. This was a week earlier then the long term average and we finished picking by the 3rd March. The fruit was then transported to the Petaluma winery in Woodside in the Adelaide Hills where on arrival it was immediately destemmed, crushed, chilled then gently pressed to tank only taking the heart run juice. The juice parcels were held cold to settle then racked and inoculated with our selected yeast strain to undergo a cool fermentation lasting up to five weeks. When approaching near sugar dryness the ferments where chilled and allowed to settle for a week prior to racking then blended. Filtered then bottled in October 2018.

The Hanlin Hill Vineyard is planted on predominantly red-brown loam over slate and is up to 550 metres above sea level. This vineyard has produced a very full flavoured dry slatey mineral Riesling, since the style first emerged with the first Riesling from Hanlin Hill in 1979. Winery Notes
