Grange Hermitage is generally recognised as Australia's finest red wine and has received international acclaim. This great wine developed by Max Schubert, commencing with the 1952 vintage, is made from premium Hermitage grapes grown at selected vineyards in South Australia & matured in small oak casks prior to bottling.

During an extensive tour of the Bordeaux region of France in 1950 Max Schubert studied numerous wine-making practices that have now become an integral part of Penfolds wine-making practices that have now become an integral part of Penfolds wine-making technique.

He also observed the practice of maturing wine in new oak casks, a method previously untried in Australia. The development of Grange Hermitage represented the beginning of a new era in Australia's red wine making tradition.

This knowledge combined with Max Schubert's foresight, skill and dedication has resulted in Grange Hermitage, the definitive Australia dry red table wine, acknowledged to be amongst the world's classic wine styles.

It is recommended that this Penfolds Grange Hermitage 1978 Bin 95 be decanted before serving.

Fruit sourced from Barossa Valley (including Kalimna Vineyard), Magill Estate (Adelaide), McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Coonawarra for Penfolds Grange Hermitage 1978. This vintage contained Shiraz (90%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%). Maturation of eighteen months in new American oak hogsheads.

Vintage Conditions were fairly warm, dry season and a mild vintage, resulting in wines at the richer end of the spectrum. Winery Notes
