Nietschke Julius 2016 Shiraz is deep purple-black in colour. The bouquet is uplifting and promptly indicates a complex wine. There are inviting aromas of fruit cake, blueberry, spice, dark plum, roses and chocolate oak.

The full-bodied palate is rich and mouth-filling. There is a wealth of ripe dark fruits giving a powerful and flavoursome wine. These intense fruit flavours are complimented with background oak barrel characters. Tannins are beautifully fine but prominent enough to add solid structure and line. This Shiraz is extremely well balanced with fruit, oak and tannin all in harmony. This wine is mighty but opulent and is completed by a very lengthy finish. Nietschke Julius can be enjoyed now or will effortlessly cellar for 5-10 years.

"Dense crimson-purple hue; rises above the odd challenge from the vintage and and its (very moderate) price. This is a quintessential Barossa Valley shiraz, with its red, purple and black fruits calmly supported by ripe tannics and enough oak to satisfy the hardest critic. Bargain."
94 Points - James Halliday, 2019 Halliday Wine Companion

"A shiraz that shows chocolate shavings peppered across blackberry pie, dark plums and morello cherries. Full body, lots of blue and black fruit and a grainy, spicy finish. Drink in 2022"
91 Points - James Suckling, jamessuckling.com

Winery & Vintage Info

In 1838 two ships are sailing bound for Australia, aboard the Zebra is Samuel Johann Nietschke and on the Prince George is Johann Georg Kalleske. They are both pioneering grapegrowing families who make the Barossa their new home. Now step forward 130 years in time to 1968 and these two families join when John Kalleske marries Lorraine Nietschke. Their sons Tony, Kym and Troy run the vineyard and the more recently established winery. However it was Lorraine’s forbears who originally made wine well before the current Kalleske boys decided to try their hand. The Nietschke family established a winery on the banks of the Jacob’s Creek soon after they planted vines in the 1840’s. To honour Lorraine’s lineage and the inspiration they have bestowed this wine proudly bears the Nietschke name.

After a long day in the vineyard, we are sure that Great Grandfather Julius would enjoy this classic Barossa Shiraz. A rich, full-bodied wine with ripe dark fruit flavours, complex oak characteristics and a long finish that whilst drinks well upon release will cellar gracefully for those with patience.

Vintage 2016 was hot and dry resulting in grapes ripening earlier than average. Winter and Spring rainfall was down by 38% whilst growing season temperatures were up by 3 degrees. Some welcome rain came at the end of January refreshing the vines and giving them good moisture to ripen to maturity. Yields from 2016 are solid and importantly quality is stunning. 2016 is certainly a star vintage with bright intense wines of great flavour intensity and inherent balance.

Nietschke Julius is sourced from select vineyards across the premier North-Western Barossa, including the renowned Greenock sub-region. The hand-pruned vines are low- yielding and are grown in shallow, sandy loam soil over deep red clay, providing ideal conditions for quality Shiraz.

The grapes were harvested in numerous batches from late February to late March. Following fermentation for 7 to 14 days on skins in open top fermenters with hand pump-overs twice daily, the grapes were pressed and the wine was aged in hogshead barrels for two years. Both seasoned and new French and American oak was used. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Winery Notes
