Battle of Bosworth McLaren Vale 'Puritan' Shiraz 2019 (Organic, Preservative Free)

The 2019 vintage of Battle of Bosworth's 'Puritan' Shiraz has amazing colour, purple and very youthful. Bursting with dark and red fruits characters on the nose, plums and blackberries too. Some hints of bramble as well. With a lush soft juicy palate this Shiraz is eminently drinkable.

Battle of Bosworth makes single vineyard, organically grown wines from the family vineyards of Joch Bosworth and Louise Hemsley-Smith. Battle of Bosworth is located in the heart of the McLaren Vale wine region in South Australia and was established in 2001.The wines take their name from the original Battle of Bosworth, fought on Bosworth Field, Leicestershire, England in 1485. Battle of Bosworth make wines with flavour, purity, texture and balance, that best express the unique characteristics of their McLaren Vale foothills site.

Joch’s commitment to organic principles in the vineyards began with an increasing sense of discomfort about using synthetic chemicals on his soils and wanted to use natural, old fashioned farming techniques.

This constant spirit of experimentation in the vineyard and winery, along with traditional vinification and natural minimal processing, combined with organic and sustainable viticulture allows them to capture the purity, integrity, texture and flavour of the vineyard in their wines.

With a Mediterranean-type climate characterised by warm summers and moderate winters and with their close proximity to the ocean, winter dominant rainfall and low relative humidity, McLaren Vale’s benign climate is ideal for organic viticulture.

Max Allen in his book, The Future Makers; Australian Wines for the 21st Century, describes Joch as one of the ‘most important organic winemakers in Australia’.

Good spring rains but lower summer rainfall than usual in McLaren Vale. As a result of this dry growing period, disease pressure was low (no mildews!) although there was a couple of heat spikes in late January and some hot days in February which resulted in reduced crops compared to 2018 (down by up to 30% depending on variety). Picking of the red fruit started at the beginning of March and was largely completed by the end of the month. Quality is terrific.

The Shiraz was picked when ripe and showing lovely red fruit characters. Crushed and fermented in small open fermenters, then into stainless steel tanks (no oak characters required), allow the wine to go through MLF (‘Malo – malolactic fermentation) and bottled under screwcap. Puritan is Battle of Bosworth's luscious version of a Spanish ‘Joven’ style wine which is made in Rioja using Tempranillo. As the winery doesn't grow any Tempranillo they used what they do best instead – Shiraz.

This wine is preservative free, organic & vegan friendly.
