The Knappstein Riesling 2016 is pale straw in colour, with aromas of fresh lemon drops mingling with granny smith apple and floral notes. There are generous citrus flavours with chalky texture and minerality. This is followed by grapefruit characters, uplifted by a touch of mango on the palate. These flavours arrive in waves and a line of juicy acidity guides the wine through to a soaring finish."The words ‘Hand Picked” do not appear on the label, as they usually do. Not sure if they’ve been dropped / whether this is a different line / or whether the grapes are no longer hand picked. Mystery abounds.Good intensity. Good push through the finish. Accessible but with underlying integrity. Lime juice and rind, blossomy characters, a lick of spice. Highly perfumed and immediately engaging both as a result, and throughout." 90 Points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front, September 2016, Drink: 2016 - 2021 "Same wine, same fruit, some hand picked, some not. Business thought it best we not purposely misrepresent ourselves so as of 2015 the words ‘Hand Picked’ do not appear on the label." - Knappstein

Winery & Vintage Info

Knappstein takes a natural approach to viticulture, with particular attention to sustainable practices and reducing environmental impact.

The Environmental Management System (EMS) implemented at Knappstein works in tandem with local initiatives to achieve a minimal impact on its surrounds whilst supporting sustainable practices at a viticultural, winery and office level. Extensive undervine mulching, the use of livestock for winter weed control, and the introduction of biological fungicides significantly reduces Knappstein's environmental footprint.

Based on a long-term sustainable approach, Knappstein has a key interest in soil health, vine nutrition and biological activity. Finding solutions to viticultural problems with reduced chemical applications is a real focus in order to maintain a balanced, natural biodiversity.

Knappstein has been able to reap the rewards of this careful cultivation of its prized vineyard sites. The company will continue to invest in the natural environment to ensure a sustainable future for winemaking in the Clare Valley.

The fruit for the Knappstein Riesling 2016 was sourced from a selection of vineyards situated mainly around the Watervale sub region of the Clare Valley including our Ackland Vineyard. Vine ages range from approximately 10-30 years old. The fruit was handpicked and gently crushed with only the best free run fruit juice used. It was then cold settled and cool fermented with neutral yeast to dryness. The wine was stabilised prior to filtration and bottling.
