"The 2016 Chianti Classico is fabulous. Deep and pliant. The 2016 is another hugely promising wine from Paolo De Marchi (Isole e Olena). All of the pedigree of the vintage comes through in the wine's textural depth and complexity. The fruit tons are dark and yet there is a wonderful sense of translucence to the 2016. Dollops of Canaiolo and Syrah complement Sangiovese nicely."

Winery & Vintage Info

The name Isole E Olena came about in the 1950s when two adjoining estates, Isole & Olena, were purchased by the De Marchi family and combined to form one. The history of both estates dates back many hundreds of years, and the earliest documentation of the village of Olena goes as far back as the 12th century.

During the 1950s, the De Marchi family planted new specialised vineyards and expanded the cellars. Today, the estate is run by Paolo De Marchi and his wife Marta. Paolo comes from a family with three generations of winemaking experience in the northern part of Piemonte and his older son, Luca, now runs the family estate there, Proprieta Sperino.

Past Vintage Reviews
2015 - "I don’t know what it says about me, but generally I prefer Chianti Classico to Brunello. This is right in the slot in terms of style, it’s ripe, but refined with cherry, perfume of wild herbs, vanilla, coffee grounds and earth. Medium-bodied, thick grainy tannin, bright acidity, with just ripe strawberry and a little lemon zest lending a pleasant zing. It’s dry, savoury, but carries fruit of good intensity and flavour, which is a character I very much like in my wine. Classico indeed. This is a ‘yes’."
93+ Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, August 2018, Drink: 2019 - 2030

"The 2015 Chianti Classico is a bright and convincing wine from Barberino Val d'Elsa, one of the main comuni in the greater Chianti Classico appellation. This is a smooth and silky Sangiovese that glides clean over the palate with strength and intensity. Bright cherry, blueberry and herbal accents with wild sage and rosemary characterize the finish. Like many other wines from the 2015 vintage, there is an evident touch of cherry sweetness on the close. Estate-grown, hand-harvested grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with approximately 15 days maceration. During fermentation, delestage and pumping-over takes place twice a day. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked into barrels and 4,000 liter casks where it matures for about one year."
92 Points - Monica Larner, Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate

"A tangy and fresh red with plum, dried lemon and berry character. Medium body, bright fruit and a fruity finish. Drink now."
