A large portion of fruit for the Deen Vat 1 Durif (Durif & a splash of Viognier) was sourced from DeBortoli's own Nericon and Home block vineyards. Some small parcels of fruit were also selected and sourced from local growers Foggiato and Sotgia.
A record wet start to winter and spring gave soil moisture a good head start to the warming season. The increased cloud cover kept us below average in the solar radiation stakes, which made for a long ripening period, perfect for retaining natural acidity. The summer was dry and warm to keep the fruit fruity and the diseases at bay.
With regular vineyard visits, the fruit was picked once rich flavours and ripe tannins had developed. The fruit was cold soaked and co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier. The wine was then pressed and settled. A portion was stored in stainless tank to retain lively fruit freshness and the remainder matured in a combination of new and used American oak barrels for 12 months before blending and bottling.
This wine is ready to enjoy now or with good cellaring, it will continue evolving over the next 5-8 years.
