d'Arenberg The Galvo Garage Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Petit Verdot 2014 (McLaren Vale)

d'Arenberg's 2014 'Galvo Garage' is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), Merlot (23%) & Petit Verdot (23%) and is slightly funky and reductive at first, this wine soon reveals varietal Cabernet aromas of black olive, black currants and bay leaf. The palate has nice weight, and tastes of mulberry and spice. There's reasonable tannin, although not too aggressive, and the wine concludes with moderate acidity and long length of flavour.

The season began well with average winter rainfall, Summer conditions were significantly warmer than average with two heatwaves through January testing the limits of the vines. Following the heatwave was rain and cool weather, which helped slow down ripening, and allowed flavour development to catch up to sugar ripeness. White wines from this vintage are fruity and very flavoursome, as are reds with ample tannin to match.

From entry level to iconic, all d’Arenberg wines have been basket pressed, reds and whites, with all red ferments foot trod during fermentation.

Walking the vineyard rows and tasting grapes, Chester Osborn classifies and determines the ideal picking time for each individual vineyard.

Small batches of grapes are gently crushed, then transferred to five tonne headed-down open fermenters, all batches remain separate until final blending. The red wines are foot trod two thirds of the way through fermentation, and then basket pressed.

d’Arenberg is one of the only wineries in Australia to basket press both white wines as well as reds, making for a labour intensive process, but the quality of the results makes this worthwhile as the action is controlled and extremely gentle.

White wines are basket pressed before fermentation to ensure no colour or tannins are extracted from the skins, and the reds are pressed afterwards. After pressing, reds are transferred to barrel to complete fermentation, and then aged on lees to slow ageing and keep the wine fresh, while also reducing oak influence.

All d’Arenberg estate owned and leased vineyards are NASAA Certified for organic and biodynamic processes. All parcels remain separate until final blending, an extensive barrel tasting process is undertaken to determine the final wine. There is no racking until final blending, and the wines do not undertake fining or filtration prior to bottling.

'Garage wines' is a term used to describe wines that are produced in the back sheds of French winemakers, who make small batch wines of the highest quality. d'Arenberg's galvanised, corrugated 'garage' was built in 1927 and still houses the traditional equipment used in the handcrafting of this wine.
