Henschke Henry's Seven 2017 (Barossa & Eden Valley)

Tasting Notes
Henschke's 2017 'Henry's Seven' is deep garnet with violet hues, and a striking bouquet of ripe plum, raspberry, blueberry and notes of blackberry intertwine with savoury notes of cracked black pepper, flowering herbs, fresh tarragon and bay leaf. Dark plum, berry compote, rhubarb and raspberry flavours lead to a peppery mid-palate of vibrant red berry acidity and fine-grained tannins, finishing with lingering flavours of mulberry and black pepper.

Reviews
"This has a very impressively fresh and vibrant nose with boysenberries and raspberries, as well as cherries on offer. There’s richness and ripeness to the palate here with a fresh, assertive yet very approachable palate. A blend of shiraz (co-fermented with viognier), grenache and mataro."
93 Points - James Suckling, June 2019

"Deep red/purple colour, with a very intense pepper-spice bouquet. A very fragrant wine, with a fine, taut palate structure with light but tight tannins. It has great elegance, refined structure for a GSM style, a most delightful and distinctive wine. The viognier seems to help lift the bouquet without being too obvious. There's a lot of black pepper and ironstone in the palate. A fine riposte to Sarah Evans!"
93 Points - Huon Hooke, The Real Review, April 2019

"Such a polished release. So run with fruit flavour. So spice-drenched. It’s floral, it’s blueberried, it has the brightness of raspberry and the bass of anise. There’s warmth here but it’s well in check; there’s a whisper of meatiness but it leans clearly to the floral side. Joyous red. If I saw it, I’d buy it."

Henry's Seven (a red blend of shiraz, grenache, mataro, and viognier) is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry’s death in 1868, his widow Sarah exercised her temperance convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all the winegrapes. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa.

A later start to picking and a mild period of ripening finished with the last grapes being picked in mid-May. A wet 2016 winter gave us a good foundation for our predominantly dry-grown vines on their own roots, and a cool, wet and fiercely windy spring followed, with a slightly higher spring rainfall than the Barossa Valley, which delayed flowering, though conditions during set meant that yields were at average levels. A mild summer with regular rainfall events followed, which allowed the grapes to reach full physiological maturity. The significant rainfall events largely missed our area and therefore we harvested the majority of our grapes in healthy condition. As always, careful hand picking in the vineyard and sorting of grapes as they were processed made sure that quality was not compromised.

The 2017 vintage comprises 73% Shiraz, 17% Grenache, 5% Mataro, and 5% Viognier. The Viognier was co-fermented with shiraz; whilst the grenache and mataro were fermented separately. Matured in 10% new and 90% seasoned French hogsheads for 10 months prior to blending and bottling. Winery Notes
